Mumbai was originally a group of seven islands (Bombay Island, Colaba, Old Woman's Island, Little Colaba, Mahim, Mazgaon, Parel, and Worli) that were merged through land reclamation projects over centuries. These islands were first united by the Portuguese and later extensively developed by the British. Chennai, Kolkata, and Cochin are coastal cities but not historically known as seven islands.
