Viruses exist at the boundary between living and non-living because they possess some but not all properties of life. Like living things, they have genetic material (DNA or RNA) and can evolve, but unlike living organisms, they lack cellular structure, cannot reproduce independently, and show no metabolism outside host cells. This unique position makes them difficult to classify.
