Autotrophs are organisms that synthesize their own food, primarily through photosynthesis. Plants, algae, and some bacteria are autotrophs that form the base of food chains. Heterotrophs consume others, carnivores eat meat, and herbivores eat plants - but all are consumers, not producers.
