In a parasitic relationship, one organism (the parasite) benefits at the expense of the other (the host). The parasite derives nutrients or shelter from the host, causing harm. This differs from mutualism (both benefit) and commensalism (one benefits, other unaffected). The key characteristic of parasitism is the unilateral benefit with harm to the host.
