In jaundice, both unconjugated bilirubin and conjugated bilirubin (bilirubin diglucuronide) can deposit in tissues including skin and sclera. The type that accumulates depends on the underlying cause: unconjugated bilirubin in hemolytic jaundice or conjugated bilirubin in obstructive jaundice. Biliverdin is not typically responsible for the yellow coloration seen in jaundice.
