Ferrochelatase is the final enzyme in heme synthesis, inserting ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX. Heavy metals like lead inhibit ferrochelatase activity, which is why lead poisoning causes anemia. It doesn't chelate iron therapeutically, degrade hemoglobin, or bind to sulfide ions.
