A king gets a boulder placed on a road. He then hides himself and watches to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers come by and simply walk around it. Many loudly blame the king for not keeping the roads clear, but no one does anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then, a peasant comes along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant lays down his burden and tries to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeds. As the peasant picks his load of vegetables, he notices a purse lying on the road where the boulder had been. The purse contains many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold is for the person who removes the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learns that every hindrance presents an opportunity to improve one’s condition.
