The B.M. Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, inaugurated in 1963, was the first planetarium to be set up in India. It remains one of the largest planetariums in Asia. While there are now Nehru Planetariums in several cities (Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore), the Birla Planetarium was the pioneering institution. 'Tagore Planetarium' and 'Gandhi Planetarium' are not the names of major planetariums in India.
