Christopher Alexander, an architect, introduced the concept of design patterns in his 1977 book 'A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction.' He described patterns as reusable solutions to common problems in architecture. The Gang of Four (Gamma, Helm, Johnson, Vlissides) later adapted Alexander's concepts to software design patterns in 1994. Kent Beck and Hans Rohnert are contributors to the patterns community but not the originators.
