This physicist lost out to arguably the most well-known genius of all time, Albert Einstein, in the explanation of why the time-space continuum falls apart near the speed of light because he concluded it was due to changes in "the ether":

Hendrik Lorentz developed the Lorentz ether theory, which explained relativistic effects through changes in the hypothetical luminiferous ether. Einstein's 1905 special relativity eliminated the need for ether and provided a more elegant explanation, leading to its rejection by the scientific community. Despite this 'loss,' Lorentz and Einstein remained friends, and Lorentz acknowledged Einstein's superior theory. Darwin was a biologist, Jordan worked on quantum mechanics, and Heisenberg developed uncertainty principle.
