The Bourne shell (sh) was the first Unix shell, created by Stephen Bourne at AT&T Bell Labs in the late 1970s. The C shell (csh) came later (1978), followed by the Korn shell (ksh) in the 1980s, and the Z shell (zsh) in 1990. The Bourne shell is the foundation for many subsequent Unix shells.
