The RMS Titanic sank on April 14, 1912 (technically in the early hours of April 15). The British passenger liner struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew, more than 1,500 died, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in history.
