In 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,' Severus Snape kills Albus Dumbledore during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. This was actually a planned act at Dumbledore's own request to spare Draco Malfoy from having to commit murder and to maintain Snape's cover as a Death Eater. Snape was working as a double agent for Dumbledore.
