Laughing gas is the common name for nitrous oxide (N2O), so called because it induces laughter and euphoria when inhaled. It was discovered by Joseph Priestley in 1772 and Humphry Davy later investigated its recreational effects. Today, it's widely used as an anesthetic in dentistry and medicine, and as a propellant in whipped cream dispensers.
