In the Mahabharata, Bhishma (originally named Devavrata) was the son of King Shantanu and Goddess Ganga. He took a terrible vow of celibacy to ensure his father could marry Satyavati. Bhishma was a central character and the grand-uncle of both the Pandavas and Kauravas.
