At the London 2012 Olympics, women's football matches began two days before the opening ceremony on July 25, 2012, making it the first sport to commence competition. This followed the tradition from Beijing 2008 where football also kicked off early. Women's rugby was not in the Olympics in 2012 (it was added later in 2016), and golf has never been part of the Summer Olympics (though it was added for the 2016 Rio Games).
