The modern game of polo originated in Manipur, India, where it was known as 'Sagol Kangjei' (horse hockey). British colonial officers discovered the game in Manipur during the 19th century and formalized it into the modern version. The Manipur Polo Association is the oldest in the world. The state's contribution is so significant that Manipur is often called the 'birthplace of polo'.
