Diamond is the hardest known natural material on Earth, ranking 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Diamond's hardness comes from its crystal structure where each carbon atom is covalently bonded to four others in a tetrahedral arrangement. Titanium carbide, boron carbide, and ceramic oxides are extremely hard materials used in cutting tools, but none approach diamond's hardness.
