The steam engine is an external combustion engine where fuel burns outside the cylinder to produce steam that drives pistons. IC (internal combustion) engines, petrol engines, and gas turbines are all internal combustion engines where fuel burns inside the combustion chamber. The steam engine is the odd one out because it uses external combustion.
