Exactly 12 men have walked on the Moon, all during NASA's Apollo program between 1969 and 1972. Neil Armstrong was the first (Apollo 11, 1969), and Gene Cernan was the last (Apollo 17, 1972). These astronauts represent humanity's only direct exploration of another celestial body to date.
