The age of a tree can be determined by counting the annual growth rings in its trunk. Each year, trees add a new layer of visible growth as a ring - one light ring (spring growth) and one dark ring (summer/fall growth) together form one annual ring. This scientific method is called dendrochronology and can also reveal climate information.
