The first vending machine in the United States, introduced in 1888 in New York City, dispensed chewing gum. It was developed by the Thomas Adams Gum Company. The machine was located on a subway platform and sold Tutti-Frutti gum for a penny. Train tickets, beer, and Coca-Cola came later in vending machine history.
