China is the third country, after the USSR (now Russia) and the USA, to independently launch a human into space using their own technology. This occurred in 2003 when Yang Liwei orbited Earth aboard Shenzhou 5. Germany, North Korea, and France have not independently developed human space launch capabilities - they have relied on cooperation with other space agencies or have focused on robotic missions.
