Venus has the hottest average surface temperature in our solar system at about 465°C (869°F) due to its thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide that creates an extreme greenhouse effect. Mercury, despite being closer to the Sun, has no atmosphere to trap heat and has a much lower average temperature.
