Chetan Sharma took the first World Cup hat-trick by an Indian bowler against New Zealand in the 1987 World Cup at Nagpur. He dismissed Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith, and Ewen Chatfield in three consecutive balls. While Kapil Dev, Harbhajan Singh, and Anil Kumble were great Indian bowlers, Kumble took his hat-trick in Tests, not ODIs, and the others never achieved a World Cup hat-trick.
