Mary I (1553-1558), known as 'Bloody Mary', was the first queen of England to rule in her own right rather than as a consort. She was succeeded by her half-sister Elizabeth I. While Lady Jane Grey briefly claimed the throne, Mary I is recognized as the first legitimate reigning queen.
