James Watt didn't invent the steam engine (Thomas Newcomen did in 1712), but his critical improvements in the 1760s-70s made it practical and efficient. Watt added a separate condenser that prevented massive heat loss, boosting efficiency dramatically. He also developed the sun-and-planet gear for rotary motion, enabling steam engines to power machinery and launch the Industrial Revolution.
