Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., an American physician and writer, coined the term 'anesthesia' in 1846 to describe the state of insensitivity to pain. He suggested this term to William Morton, who had successfully demonstrated ether anesthesia. Holmes derived it from the Greek word 'anesthesis' meaning 'loss of sensation'.
