Cheran Express is named after the Chera dynasty which ruled parts of present day Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The train connects Chennai to Coimbatore, a major industrial city in Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore is often called the Manchester of South India due to its textile industry. This is an important intra state train route.
