Nalanda University, the ancient center of Buddhist learning, was destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji's invasion in 1193 AD. This marked the end of a great institution that had flourished for over 700 years. The destruction was part of the Turkish conquest of Bihar, which led to the decline of Buddhism in India.
