Chess originated in India during the Gupta Empire (6th century AD) as 'Chaturanga' - the four divisions (infantry, cavalry, elephants, chariots) represented by pawn, knight, bishop, and rook. It spread to Persia as 'Shatranj', then to Europe. China has Xiangqi (derived from Chaturanga), US is modern, and England adopted it via Europe.
